Sustainable Development

At Anadarko, we seek to safely produce oil and natural gas in a manner that ensures the protection of our communities and environment. Our Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) team works seamlessly with operations and facilities to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations and maintain a safe workplace. We also engage proactively with the communities in which we operate to maintain a constant, consistent and transparent dialogue about our operations.

Sustainability Spotlight:

An example of our commitment to sustainable development is our advancement of the tankless battery in Colorado and West Texas. Anadarko continually strives to reduce surface impacts associated with production facilities. The original tank batteries for horizontal wells typically required four tanks for each well, and our first-generation lease automatic custody transfer (LACT) unit batteries reduced this number by half. Through continued design modifications, the installation of LACT units has reduced the need for storage tanks to only one for several wells. The reduction in truck traffic previously required for liquids transfer, and the associated reduction of emissions, dust, noise, and local road congestion, is a direct and positive result achieved by the new production facility design. At our DJ Basin operations, truck traffic associated with hauling oil and water has been reduced by at least 75 percent in the first year of LACT batteries being commissioned. Lastly, the viewshed associated with the tankless battery is reduced from previous designs. Decreasing the size and height of the pad makes these facilities less noticeable for local residents, while still allowing for efficient production. This technology is being applied in West Texas as Anadarko begins pad development. 

Additional Examples of Sustainable Development in Practice

  • Garnet Blasting Media Recycling: In late 2013, Anadarko began using garnet as an alternative to sand in blasting activities at our Gulf of Mexico facilities. In contrast to sand, which must be disposed of after initial use, garnet can be recycled for blasting reuse a minimum of five times. Garnet is non-toxic, provides significantly lower dust emissions than those from sand, and improves the performance of corrosion inhibitors. Anadarko crews recycled 800 tons of garnet in 2016.
  • Impact Mitigation: The following voluntary initiatives are examples of how we mitigate residential impacts in Colorado: installation of sound walls for drilling and completion operations, limitation of non-essential operations to daytime hours, redirection of lights, and implementation of dust control measures.
  • Noise Reduction: The DJ Basin built an internal team, including individuals with specialties in operations, regulatory, HSE, communications, legal and stakeholder relations to discuss and determine how to best assess the risk around noise levels. Together, the team reviewed each proposed location of operation and evaluated for expected noise levels based on models of the equipment to be used as well as internal data collected from the Response Line. Based on the expected noise levels and proximity to stakeholders, the team chose mitigation strategies to minimize risk, which could include mitigation at the source on the equipment or full location noise mitigation.
  • Water Management: Anadarko's Technical Water team shares information, technology and lessons learned around water management practices. Each team develops strategies to mitigate risks around disposal. The DJ Basin team is working to obtain a water discharge permit and identify treatment technologies. The Delaware Basin team developed significant storage capacity for reuse of flowback. 
  • Vehicle Safety Program: Vehicle safety is an important part of our safety program. Anadarko sets forth the guidelines and
    expectations for operating company vehicles in its Vehicle Safety Policy, which states that all company vehicles will be operated in a safe manner. Vehicle incidents is a closely tracked metric. The HSE staff and Operational teams work together to evaluate the cause of all vehicle incidents and develop practices to reduce such incidents. The Safety team works with Operations, Legal and other groups to investigate any incident. The team evaluates the data for key trends and promptly works to develop mitigating strategies. There are numerous examples of these mitigating strategies, including providing driver training, installing rovers in company vehicles that tracks driver performance, requiring employees to limit backing and parking for first move forward, disallowing the use of cell phones while driving. The Safety team evaluates the efficacy of the various strategies, engages with peer companies to learn best practices, and works through industry groups to strengthen federal and state safety regulations.
