Stakeholder Engagement

Anadarko is committed to sustainable and prudent development, safety in our operations and building trust within the communities where it operates. Working collaboratively with our local partners and all of our stakeholders is a foundation for everything Anadarko does worldwide.

We seek to be proactive in engaging with local governments and the citizens they represent and take time to communicate with our stakeholders who are impacted by the responsible development of oil and natural gas resources. We hold true to our core value of open communication and as such, we prioritize working with stakeholders at all levels including indigenous peoples to share information on our operations. This includes explaining how a well is drilled and hydraulically fractured or completed, how Anadarko uses best management practices to mitigate impacts, and how the economic benefits of our activity are a benefit to all.

We value two-way dialogue, so that we can listen to and address concerns, communicate in a meaningful way, and we encourage collaborative efforts for the betterment of the communities where we live and operate.

Community concerns vary considerably depending on variables such as population density, geographical features and operational phase. We strive for proactive engagement and transparency, responding to community concerns as they arise. Examples of typical concerns for some of our major plays, and the types of responses that might be considered, include:

  • Colombia: We actively engage with fishing communities to ensure that awareness of Anadarko activities is well understood. In order to counteract any impact on these communities from company activities, we are working to provide local fishing associations with livelihood training and fishing equipment.
  • Mozambique: Since the announcement of the resettlement process, hundreds of consultations have been undertaken in Afungi communities in the local language of their preference, including group discussions with community leaders and at-risk populations. Our field engagement teams have also supported the election of representative committees to ensure community interests are represented throughout the entire resettlement engagement process.

Field reports of community concerns are compiled and reported regularly to management for appropriate mitigation and response. Concerns of the communities are reported to senior management in management reports, and are used to initiate operational innovation. Stakeholder concerns are included as part of the company's regular enterprise risk assessment process.

Stakeholder Spotlight: Colorado

Image of Colorado Open House Anadarko employs about 1,100 men and women who live in 80 different communities along Colorado's Front Range. These employees make it a priority to be actively engaged in their neighborhoods, civic organizations, churches and many other local interests. 

Additionally, the company has a specialized team that organizes outreach activities, such as open houses, sponsorships, informational booths, as well as supporting the company's Colorado Hotline and stakeholder response system. Through this program Anadarko regularly conducts open houses with communities where drilling, completions or other oil and natural gas activities are planned in an effort to openly share our operating story, encourage dialogue and respond to concerns.

Our Stakeholder Relations efforts were key in the spring and summer of 2017, following a tragic accident in Firestone, Colo. Our team arranged meeting with the affected homeowners associations to share information, established a website where residents could ask questions and quickly receive answers and also arranged to fund the purchase of methane detection equipment for individual homeowners.

We firmly believe that de-mystifying our industry, creating transparency, being responsive to concerns and providing facts is an important part of earning public trust and providing a better understanding of the regulatory environment under which we operate.

Stakeholder Spotlight: Mozambique

Image of Community Meeting in MozambiqueOur approach to establishing mutually beneficial and constructive relationships with our stakeholders is also evident in Mozambique. The development of the LNG park and transformational development opportunity it offers the country has awakened great interests from a wide range of local, national and international stakeholders.

We cultivate stakeholder relationships that are thoughtful, inclusive and responsive to our stakeholders’ needs and diverse interests, especially communities on the Afungi peninsula in the Palma District, the location where we are working to develop an LNG park with Area 1 participants.

Our engagement activities in Mozambique extend to information events, open house events, participation in industry and multi-stakeholder platforms and discussions, as well as participation in industry fairs, national and international gas conferences and summits. Hundreds of participants representing the national and provincial Government, national directorates and institutions, donor agencies, foreign embassies, development organizations, civil society, engineering and construction companies, academic institutions, media representatives, small- and medium-sized enterprises and many other role-players in the oil and natural gas industry recently attended open houses hosted by Anadarko to learn more about the Project and engage in meaningful conversations.

On a local level, Anadarko is making a concerted effort is made to engage communities who will be directly affected by the construction of the LNG park, specifically those who will need to be resettled. Participatory engagement processes provide communities the opportunity to voice their recommendations, preferences, needs and concerns regarding the resettlement process, and ensure that they have access to information on the nature of the LNG development, the extent of potential impacts resulting from the development, how impacts will be mitigated and managed, and benefits they will experience as part of the development of the LNG park.

Since the announcement of the resettlement process, more than 300 consultations have been undertaken in Afungi communities in the local language of their preference, including group discussions with community leaderships, vulnerable groups and those easily marginalized. Our field engagement teams have also supported the election of representative committees to ensure community interests are represented throughout the entire resettlement engagement process.

Additionally, in the Palma District, we recently conducted community-level open house meetings conducted in ten villages, with an estimated total attendance of 750 people. These events were conducted in the village “nkutanos” (meeting places) dedicated to project-community engagement. The events were conducted by the Project’s Community Relations team which delivered information in the preferred language of each community, including Swahili, Kimwani, Makonde, Makwe and Portuguese. Community participation and open discussion were encouraged.

We believe our stakeholder relationships are enabling us to become a respected member of Mozambican society, one that will continue to earn support and trust as the LNG project develops and the transformational opportunity is realized.
